    "# HW 4: Inside an AI agent\n",
    "\n",
"Tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and ChatGPT's \"agent mode\" can read your files, run commands, search the web, and fix bugs, working on their own for many steps.\n",
"It can look like magic. In this assignment you will see that it isn't: an agent is **a language model, a handful of ordinary functions, and a loop** that connects them.\n",
"The code that runs that loop is called the **harness**.\n",
    "\n",
"You will start from a single call to Claude, take apart what comes back, act as the harness yourself by hand, and then build a small coding agent that finds and fixes bugs in a real (tiny) Python project.\n",
"Along the way you will look at what the model actually sees, what it costs, and what can go wrong.\n",
    "\n",
"**Like HW 3, this homework is mostly not about writing code.** You will *predict*, *run*, *investigate*, and *modify*. There are three short blanks to fill in (in Part 3), and each one repeats something you will have already done by hand.\n",
    "\n",
"### How you will be graded\n",
    "\n",
"This notebook should be submitted, but it will not be graded. Your grade comes from a **12–15 minute one-on-one check-off**, where you will answer questions about **3–4 topics chosen by the instructor** from this list:\n",
    "\n",
"- Your **Part 7 experiments** (explain one: what you predicted, what happened, and why)\n",
"- **The API response and the conversation** (Part 1)\n",
"- **Tool calling: who does what** (Part 2)\n",
"- **The agent loop** (Parts 3 and 4)\n",
"- **Context and cost** (Part 5)\n",
"- **Permissions and prompt injection** (Part 6)\n",
    "\n",
    "Questions come in three flavors:\n",
"- **Trace:** \"Here is a conversation. How many API calls did it take? What is in `messages` after turn 2?\"\n",
"- **Explain why:** \"Why is the tool result sent back with the role `user`?\"\n",
"- **Predict:** \"What would happen if the harness didn't add the model's reply to `messages`?\"\n",
    "\n",
"Each topic is scored 0–3. There are no retakes. The **✅ Check yourself** boxes throughout the notebook are good practice.\n",
    "\n",
    "### How to work\n",
    "\n",
"- **Predict before you run.** Write your prediction *first*. The model's replies change from run to run, so your prediction is about *what kind of thing* will happen, not the exact words.\n",
"- **Answer the written questions** in the \"Your answer\" cells. Short answers (1–3 sentences) are fine.\n",
"- **Using AI:** You are encouraged to use the course tutor chatbot (or other AI tools) to *understand* the code. But you will be on your own at the check-off. If an AI explains something to you, close the chat and try to explain it back in your own words.\n",
"- **API calls cost real money.** The course pays for your usage through Glassroom. The whole lab costs about **$1–3** per student if you follow it as written. Cells that call Claude are marked 💲. Don't put API calls inside loops you haven't read.\n",
    "\n",
    "### Schedule\n",
    "\n",
"The lab is due **Wednesday 9/30 at 11:59pm**. Class on Monday 9/28 falls in the middle of the week.\n",
"- **Before Monday's class:** Parts 0–3. In class we will build on them.\n",
    "- **After class:** Parts 4–7.\n",

    "## 0.2 Your API key\n",
    "\n",
"To call Claude from code you need an **API key**, a secret string that identifies you. In this course you get one from **Glassroom**, not from Anthropic.\n",
"Your requests go to Glassroom's server, which forwards them to Claude. Usage is billed to the course, so treat your key like a password: don't share it or post it anywhere. If you think it has leaked, tell an instructor right away so we can turn it off.\n",
    "\n",
"**Never paste your key into a notebook cell.** Here's why:\n",
"- You will **submit this notebook** on Canvas, and you may upload it to the tutor chatbot. The key goes wherever the notebook goes.\n",
"- Deleting it later doesn't help. Jupyter keeps **checkpoint copies** of your notebook (in a hidden `.ipynb_checkpoints` folder), and the key may also have been printed in an output.\n",
"- If a notebook with a key ever lands on GitHub, automated scanners find it within minutes.\n",
    "\n",
"Instead, the cell below stores your key in a separate file called **`.env`** in your `~/e190bo` folder. The notebook reads the key from that file, so it never appears in the notebook itself. It works the same way on macOS and Windows.\n",
    "\n",
    "### Save your key\n",
    "\n",
"1. In Glassroom, find the **Your API key** box. Next to the key (it starts with `sk-`), click **Copy**. Use the **Copy** button next to the key itself, not **Copy with key**. (If you use the wrong one by mistake, it's fine: the cell below handles both.)\n",
"2. Run the cell below. A box will appear. Paste into it and press **Enter**. The box hides what you type, so you won't see the key.\n",
"3. **Double-check.** The cell prints the start and end of the key it saved, like `sk-AbC1...wXyZ`. In Glassroom, the first characters shown in the key box should match. To compare the last four characters too, click **Show**.\n",
    "\n",

"- **Glassroom's server** sits in between. It checks your course key, forwards the request to Anthropic, and keeps track of what the course is spending.\n",

"Why would you change it? More thinking usually means better decisions on hard steps, but it costs more tokens and time. Showing summaries costs nothing extra and helps *you* understand the agent: you can see *why* it chose each action.\n",
"If you pass `thinking=None`, the setting is left out of the request entirely. You'll need that in Part 7 for Claude Haiku, a smaller model that doesn't accept these options.\n",
